Chapter 10: Backstory
“So…” Thiamine, who was failing miserably at extreme snooker, said “What is it that you lot do exactly?”
“Well, we’re a cheaply assembled and affordable crack team or mercenaries, no job is too demeaning!” Annie replied, accidentally potting the cue ball, thereby giving Thiamine her only points of the game so far
“Uh huh… so, how exactly was the whole thing started?”
“Well, we don’t really know too much about that to be honest. See, it was started fifteen or so years ago by Emkay, Reshter and four three others. The rest of us don’t know much about how they got together, why they started the K-team, or what happened soon after they joined. What we do know is that one of the members betrayed the team to an angry ex-client, and led a surprise attack on the old base. Two of the members were brutally murdered, Emkay and Reshter barely escaped with their lives.
“After that Emkay and Reshter drifted around a bit, doing odd minor jobs, when one day someone mystifyingly commissioned them to do a huge job, infiltrate a huge paedophile-terrorist organisation and destroy them from the inside out. But they would need help, so Emkay used his contacts to recruit the eccentric technological genius Mitxela, over the top weapons master Atrius, and me as the beautiful woman to seduce the members of the organisation, although that idea failed due to them being, y’know, paedophiles. Nonetheless, we succeeded in taking them down and received a huge reward which we used to build the base we’ve got now.
“In the ten years since members have come and gone, numbers never exceeding eight, but the five of us have always remained, although, had Solarrain found his way back here then numbers would have reached nine, although that catastrophe has been avoided due to Sol’s death and Solarrain still being AWOL.”
“Oh, right I see. So, what mission is going on at the moment?”
“That’s probably best left to Emkay to explain, as he knows most about it at the moment. Actually, I think we should probably go back to the main room now. It’s time for you to learn the truth.”
“What truth?” Thiamine asked
“Iunno,” Annie replied shrugging her shoulders “I just thought it sounded dramatic.”
